Gold Coast’ G: link next stage to begin
The Gold Coast city is on a surge. Reports have predicted the city’s population to grow to 1 million over the next 20 years. Along with a growing tourism sector (holiday visitation increased by 7.2 per cent to 3.8 million in 2018) the increase in people is now driving a demand for an expansion in public transport along the coast.
The Gold Coast Light Rail
The Gold Coast Light Rail is a mass transportation system that has been servicing the Gold Coast since July 2014. The transportation link consists of a single 20-kilometre line with a total of 19 stations between Helensvale and Broadbeach. This year, the third stage of the light rail is set to begin.
According to the IRJ (International Railway Journal), the final stage (3A) would extend the network by 7km, stretching from the current terminus at Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads, and would include eight new stations.
From the Airport to Helensvale
Once the tram is complete, it will enable people flying in to the Coolangatta Airport to travel with ease all the way through to Helensvale, and to any of the locations in between. About 6.5 million people come through Gold Coast Airport each year and the vast percentage are leisure travellers. This means the City needs an efficient and easy public transport linkage that accommodates visitors to the city and local residents well into the future.
According to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, the construction of the new link can take up to three years, with the possibility of trams operating to Burleigh Heads in 2023 already.
